Independent oil and gas exploration companies are important in shaping the worldwide exploration and production of reserves especially in more risky countries. They are also involved in securing capital from private investors and banks to develop fields with good potential.

According to The Association of British Independent Oil Exploration Companies , its members spent some £340 million on exploration and appraisal worldwide of which £262 million was outside the UK in 2006.
